The Board of WHA is very pleased to announce the appointment of Darren Ward to the role of CEO of WHA. Darren will commence his role with WHA on 10 February 2025.
Darren brings with him a wealth of experience from over 20 years in the sport and recreation industry, having worked in New Zealand, Europe, and the Middle East. His background includes a Master’s Degree in Performance Sports Coaching and a proven track record of developing and leading successful sport programs.
Darren’s lifelong passion for sport has shaped his career and personal life. He is eager to bring his experience and enthusiasm to Waikato Hockey, supporting our vision to be New Zealand’s leading Hockey Association. We are confident that Darren’s expertise in strategic planning, relationship management, and community engagement will be invaluable to our organization.
As the former CEO of Swimming Waikato, Darren built strong partnerships with various stakeholders, including funding bodies, councils, and community organizations. He also successfully developed and implemented participation and competitive swimming programs, significantly increasing overall engagement and performance levels.
In addition to his coaching achievements, Darren currently holds leadership roles as an Appointed Director at Canoe Racing New Zealand and Board Chair at Ngāhinapōuri School.
