Diana Weavers

The Bayleys Midlands NHL women’s hockey team completed a very successful pre League quadrangular tournament. They opened the weekend with an impressive first half display against Wellington. Although failing to score, they created numerous opportunities and dominated play. Wellington gained parity in the second half and like the Midlands team, was unable to capitalise on the few chances created and the sides drew nil all.

Diana Weavers was instrumental in their match against North Harbour, making crucial tackles and linking with the midfield to good effect. Robbie Matthews, Shannon Cochrane and Kate Mahon dominated the midfield and provided their speedy strikers with a steady flow of attacking ball. Matthews opened the scoring with a PC after a period of sustained attack and they went further ahead early into the second spell when Stacey Brannigan scored. Midlands eased up the pace and paid dearly as Holly Riini and Cushla Glauser both scored for Harbour to lock up the score.

Midlands pressed forward in search of a winner and Taupo’s George Nation capped off a fine days play when she rifled in the winner minutes from full time to earn a deserved 3-2 victory. The weekend was capped off with an exceptional all round display against a very experienced Central unit in winning 3-1.

Lauren MacMenigall opened the scoring deflecting in a Diana Weavers PC strike and although only leading 1-0 at half time, the Midlands team dominated large phases of the half. Central’s Tara Drysdale put the sides on level pegging early after the restart but a piece of individual magic from Midlands Black Stick Kate Mahon, restored their advantage when providing a superb cross to an unmarked Gemma Flynn to score. MacMenigall sealed the victory with a late goal. Both Midlands goalkeepers Tina McKenzie and Lizzie Holmes made some outstanding saves to assist in the win.

The Bayleys Midlands Men’s team didn’t fare as well as expected and were caught napping in their opening game against North Harbour and trailed 4-0 by half time. Tighter marking in the second spell prevented the speedy Harbour strikers from increasing the lead but Sam Bartholomew converted a stroke for his hat trick and a final 5-0 score line. The men competed well against a very well rehearsed Wellington side and held them scoreless for quite some time. Eventually the sheer weight of possession told and the capital side scored three goals before the break. Speed of passing and general play took toll on the midlands marking game and Wellington ran out 8-0 winners. Central competed well in their 5-2 loss to North Harbour but were a shadow of that effort when they took on Midlands in the last game of the weekend. With the introduction of Hong Kong International guest player Arif Ali, Canterbury guest player Craig Paterson, and Tauranga’s Barry Watson for the final game, the Midlands team played with more assuredness and composure. Ali scored a hat trick of PC drag flicks and aided in setting up goals for Paul Rae and Paterson with Jonny Forbes also finding the back of the Central net for a 6-2 win. Coach Brad Jensen was pleased with the win but conceded that his side had a way to go to be competitive against the top four sides.
