GETTING
STARTED UMPIRING.
Junior Badge
A
course for NZ Junior Badge (a candidate under 19 yrs of age) or for those
people who wish to begin umpiring at a school or Junior level.
Time 4hours plus test
Venue Each
Association will train presenters to take these courses.
Presenters The
presenters will be trained initially by people appointed by the NZHUC

Criteria
for the Award of a Junior Badge (Under
19 years of age)
1
Attend a Rules Awareness Course facilitated by an Association appointee
2
Complete the Junior Badge theory test
3
Be assessed for practical umpiring by an
Association appointed assessor
The assessor will forward the completed practical
assessment and marked theory paper to the Umpire Development Manager at the New
Zealand Hockey office.
If the assessment has shown the candidate has met the
appropriate standard a certificate and badge will be forwarded to their
Association for presentation.
LEVEL
ONE UMPIRE
This is the previous Grade II
Time 6
hours (1 day)
Venue To
be decided by the NZHUC on receipt of applications
Presenters Appointed
by NZHUC
Cost $50
(includes presenters fees, practical exam fee, photocopying, hireage of seminar
room, lunch).
Any travel to the venue will be at the
candidates or AssociationÕs cost.
When Courses
to be available in regions each year when enough applicants
Practical NZHUC
will liaise with candidate and examiner to undertake practical examinations at
a time ,venue and standard for this Level.

be received on the official form (on website ) at the NZHF office by deadline (22nd
April)
LEVEL ONE
COURSE
OBJECTIVE
To
provide participants with standards and interpretations of current umpiring
methods so they can be assessed for a Level One Umpire accreditation.
AIMS
AND GOALS
At
the completion of the course the candidate should be able to :
* Perform
the role of an umpire at school and club level
* Co
operate with other umpires and officials
* Cope
with the umpiring environment
* Perform
all administrative duties and responsibilities as required
* Interpret
and apply the rules
* Make
decisions
* Control the
match in a manner that safeguards the welfare of, and enhances the enjoyment
for players
* Achieve a
level of fitness appropriate to the standard of hockey in which the umpire will
officiate
* Implement the
skills and techniques of umpiring, namely correct positioning, signaling, use
of the whistle, and use of control techniques
Once
the candidate has completed the course and passed the practical assessment they
will receive a certificate and updating requirements. Accreditation will automatically
expire after four years unless
1.
The umpire achieves the next level within five years
2.
The umpire completes another course to the same level of
accreditation or is reassessed by an appointed NZHUC examiner within four
years.

Level Two
COURSE OBJECTIVE
To
provide candidates with standards and interpretations of current umpiring
methods so they can be assessed for a Level 2 Umpire Accreditation

representative and National level
á
Co operate with other umpires and officials
á
Cope with the umpiring environment
á
Perform all administrative duties and responsibilities as
required
á
Interpret and understand current rules as approved by NZHF
and FIH
á
Make decisions in a competent manner
á
Control the match in a manner that safeguards the welfare
of, and enhances the enjoyment for players
á
Achieve a level of fitness appropriate to the standard in
which the umpire will officiate
á
Implement the skills and techniques of umpiring, namely
correct positioning, signaling, use of whistle and use of control techniques.
ACCREDITATION
Once
the candidate has completed the course and passed the practical assessment they
will receive a badge, a certificate and updating requirements. Accreditation
will automatically expire after 6 years unless:
The umpire is reassessed by a NZHUC
appointed examiner
If
the umpire fails a re assessment they must participate in the Level two
accreditation course and be practically examined by a NZHUC appointed examiner.
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS
TIME 2
Days (Theory)
Payment
is required and an application from the candidates Association to the New
Zealand Umpire Development Manager to attend the course and be assessed for a
practical examination
Candidates
must have passed the Level One accreditation unless a special application is
approved by the NZHUC.
Candidates
must attend the two day course and have their involvement assessed by the
presenter.
Candidates
must be practically assessed within 12 months of attending the course.
