High School and Waikato Diocesan School shared the honours in the Secondary
Girls Premier Hockey competition with a thrilling 1all draw. Diocesan had been the competition standouts during the season and stamped their authority on the final from the onset. Hillcrest held the ever dangerous Dio striker Debbie Bell at bay during a scoreless first half and NHL rep Clarissa Eshuis kept the Dio defense on their toes. Dio had a large number of very vocal supporters barracking them on but it was Eshuis who provided a quick break for Kate Treblecott to score for Hillcrest and silence the support. Bell had an off night with many of her shots going well wide of the goal until late in the game she found her mark to leave the sides deadlocked. With the last play of the game, up and coming Umpire Tosca Warren correctly awarded Dio a penalty stroke for repeated breaking at the PC. A stunned Hillcrest side rejoiced moments later when Bell's shot was saved and the teams shared the trophy. The Boy's Premier final was also evenly contested with favourites St Peters soaking up a first half onslaught by the Melville forwards. St Peters took the lead somewhat against the run of play and were luckily awarded a second moments later when Fraser Kilgour convinced the umpire he had touched in a shot from outside the circle. St Peters captain and playmaker Chris Slater was well marked and almost upstaged by his novice younger brother Andrew who harrassed the Melville defence forcing important turnover ball. Melville's Joel Finn had a solid game but could not produce the form that saw Melville draw with St Peters twice previously. A late goal saw St Peters deservedly take the title for the first time 3-0. The U15's were evenly contested with Dio and Hillcrest sharing the girls title after drawing 2 all. St Peters showed plenty of skill in keeping a vastly more experienced Hamilton Boys High team in check, narrowly going down 1-2. Other results...
