St
Pauls Old Collegians met the Rankin Cup 1stXI on the Gallagher No1 Tigerturf
for the annual hockey clash.
To spice things up, no keepers were used. The match was very evenly balanced
with Suburbs Piako senior division players, CJ Mahon
and Chris Furminger, propping up some of the past players
from the St Pauls 1stXI. Most of the Old Collegians had played India
Shield and Rankin Cup in their day at St Pauls; and some
of the old skills were not lost. The game ended in a draw at 5-5. In the
second half the Rankin
Cup 1stXI turned
on some hilarious penalty corner magic that had the large crowd roaring
with laughter. This really showed the class of this team and a strong
"esprit de corp" which makes up a
winning team. The Old Collegians now look to a replay at
the opening of the St Pauls new turf scheduled for the beginning of the
2007 season. Old Collegians wanting to be part of this event should
contact the Chairperson of the Junior Management Board of Waikato Hockey,
Richard Calderwood; or CJ Mahon.
A guest appearance
of much loved, retired teacher, John Furminger, supported
by all his children, was well received. John is the former director of
Tihoi, St Paul's world renowned
outdoor education facility in the central North Island, and
has played an important part in the adolescent development of both the
Old Collegians and the current 1stXI Champions. More
