The Waikato Year 5/6 Girls ‘A’ Team has continued on with
their winning streak as did not lose a game, or concede a goal while attending
the McGrath Under 11 Tournament in Rotorua last week. They were convincing
tournament winners, despite the games being very closely fought, and their
resolve was demonstrated by having to come back and finish 10 minutes
of the game against North Harbour Development, which had been shortened
by lightening the previous day. In the final on Saturday, the whole team
displayed great team spirit and determination to win against Tauranga
Pandettes 1-0.
Coach Naaz Shah, who played for the Indian Women’s
team for 10 years and also captained it, coached this year’s team
along with Catherine McLean as her Assistant.
Having a persons of this calibre bodes extremely well for the future of
Waikato hockey, at all levels.
The Waikato Girls Development Team, coached by Debbie Broadhead,
showed great improvement over the tournament, and scoring in the last
few seconds of their game to win 3-2, against a strong Counties Manakau
team, proved this.
