| This must rank as one of the best performances in the history of Waikato's participation at Collier Cup National Tournament EVER! Placed second in the pool play, the girls did not concede a goal; but scored 32 times against their opponents. Only in the playoff against Canterbury, did they concede 2 goals. They were seeded 7th at the start of the week. A fantastic effort by the girls and Coach. Team: Natasha Jacques, Rosanna Carr (Diocesan) Katie Rademaker (St Peters) Betsy Hart (Melville) Stacey Belton, Amber Trower (Matamata) Lydia Velzian, Isobel Dingwall, Alex Hunt (Southwell) Georgia Cameron, Rosie Bird (Fairfield) Sal Shah, Johanna Theelen, Kim Tanner, Gaby Gardiner, Amy Booth (Peachgrove) Coach - Jon Tanner, Assistant Coaches - Naz Shah, Jo McAffrey Manager - Debbie Dingwall ![]() |

The Waikato Under 13 Girls Hockey team produced an outstanding performance at the 2004 Collier tournament in Christchurch, despite scoring 36 goals and conceding no goals (a record) at the tournament, a semi-final penalty strokes loss to Canterbury was all that stood between them and a deserved finals place. None the less, the team proudly achieved its best ever performance with its third place finish, from the 26 teams at the tournament. The teams run to the finals started with goal scoring spree which saw wins over Taranaki 5-0, West Coast 14-0, Poverty Bay 4-0, Bay of Plenty 2-0 and Marlborough 7-0. |
| The last pool game saw the team dominate eventual finalists Auckland but 0-0 a draw was the end result. The team had its best game of the season in its quarter final against arch-rival and tournament favourites North Harbour with an over-whelming 3-0 win to Waikato. Unfortunately though it came at the cost of a head injury to inside left Rosie Bird who was unavaliable for the afternoon's semi-final against hosts Canterbury. Once again Waikato dominated territory, penalty corners and shots on goal through-out the game, but an awesome performance by the Canterbury goalkeeper kept them out for a 0-0 draw in normal time and again in the eventual penalty shoot out won by Canterbury 4-2 that was to bring a cruel end to waikato's challenge for the title. Played 9 games in 6 days it would have understandable for the team to tire in their 3rd place play-off but once again the Waikato team showed against South Canterbury what great shape they were in, and while only a 1-0 win, there was only one team in it. Up front strikers centre forward Amy Booth was outstanding while Rosanna Carr, Ali Hunt and Gaby Gardiner were all strong skilful runners who created havoc in opposing defences. The high work rate and determination of Kim Tanner at centre half was potent force, and with the skills and athleticism of inside forwards Natasha Jacques and Rosie Bird, they were a formidable midfield combination. In defence Sal Shah and Johanna Theelen and were rock solid tacklers and shrewd distributors at the back, while the speed, agility and passing of wing halves Katie Rademaker, Lydia Velzian and Isobel Dingwall were key contributors in both attack and defence. Georgia Cameron's goalkeeping was outstanding and her deputy Betsy Hart made sure Waikato's goal stayed intact. Off the bench Stacy Belton's back-up to midfielders and the strikers was vital, as was Amber Trower in covering for the wing halves. Team: Natasha Jacques, Rosanna Carr (Diocesan) Katie Rademaker (St Peters) Betsy Hart (Melville) Stacey Belton, Amber Trower (Matamata) Lydia Velzian, Isobel Dingwall, Alex Hunt (Southwell) Georgia Cameron, Rosie Bird (Fairfield) Sal Shah, Johanna Theelen, Kim Tanner, Gaby Gardiner, Amy Booth (Peachgrove) Coach - Jon Tanner, Assistant Coaches - Naz Shah, Jo McAffrey Manager - Debbie Dingwall The fact that five key players (Rosie Bird, Natasha Jacques, Lydia Velzian, Kim Tanner and Ali Hunt) were form 1 is amazing and promising for next year when we host the tournament in Hamilton.... |
