27 June 2004

In the ABN AMRO Craig's match of the day Hamilton Old Boys belied the form books when drawing 4 all with Fraser Tech.
Tech's player of the day Rob Gunn opened the scoring and increased the lead to 2 nil in a one sided opening stanza. In an inspired positional move to centre forward, David Heappey struck back with four unanswered goals to rock the Tech supporters and set the game alight. Old Boys concentrated on playing a controlled game at pace and constantly troubled the Tech's defensive patterns. Richard Petherick put his trademark drag flick in his back pocket and drove a hard low shot past the Old Boys defense to give Tech a lifeline. Gunn cooly lobbed the keeper to earn his team a draw after good advantage from umpire Ross Tritt. The draw saw Tech slip to third after Tauranga Old Boys and Ecolab Suburbs Piako had 6-0 and 6-1 wins at Blake Park in Mount Maunganui over Papakura A and Mount Maunganui respectively .

Southern United and University set the tone for the local derbies with a hard fought 4-3 win to the students. Varsity opened the scoring through Kylie Morgan and increased the lead with a penalty stroke by Colleen Bayliss.
Southern replied through a Jeanna Platt field goal before Mel Yule restored the students advantage. Southern fought their way back into the game with goals to Jess Irvine and Sandra Laird to leave the scores locked up 3-3.
Bazuka Sports University coach Richard Clarke welcomed the return to full fitness of schoolgirl U18 representatives Clarissa Eshuis, Alyse Morgan and Lymarah Whaurerau who all provided good support for K Morgan and Yule. Eshuis proved a handful in the closing stages of the match with some driving runs into the circle and the ever present Yule was on hand to seal a well deserved victory with her second goal. Newly promoted young goalkeeper Hayley Marshell also had an outstanding game for the students.

Te Awamutu defeated Fraser Tech 2-1 in the late game. Maria Dunn and Greer Cliff gave Te Awamutu a handy lead in the first half as Tech struggled to find last weeks form. Te Awamutu controlled the game well and looked set for a comfortable win before Tech strike forward Debbie Bell made good use of a rare chance to leave the game in the balance. The goal by Tech should have seen the game intensify but both sides were content to let it drift along. Dunne should have increased the lead when Te Awamutu were awarded a penalty stroke, but Candy Hart in goal for Tech had other ideas. Hart was again in the action after Dunn made a telling and skilful run along the baseline to set up a golden opportunity for Cliff to score her second goal. Rachel Falconer and Kath Drew also stood out for Te Awamutu in their 2-1 victory.

The Cook University kept their top four aspirations alive with a tight fought 4-3 victory over Counties side Kohekohe. Varsity took the early lead but the visitors proved a handful for the students as the sides traded goals. Goals by Andrew Massey and Hitesh Dahya for Kohekohe left the scores locked up a 2-2 before Dahya gave the visitors the edge. Varsity's Wessel Eshuis paved the way for the fight back with a well taken driving shot from a PC and Tim Smith clinched the game when slotting home after a goal mouth melee. Varsity striker Hayden Ripia had a solid game making some telling runs.

Te Awamutu's Intercity Reserve teams rounded off a good day for the club with one sided victories. The ageless pocket rocket Angela Williams providing six of the goals in Bradleys Bunch Te Awamutu's 9-0 demolition of BOP Ngapuna and Te Awamutu Blue were easy 5-1 victors over Southern B. The predominantly veteran Te Awamutu Blue team had too much experience for the energetic Southern side, with Robyn Wells oustanding in defense.
