In the final games of the NZ Hockey League, Midlands had only pride to play for. Canterbury women led by Blacksticks Stacey Carr, Diana Weavers & player of the match Rachel Robertson dominated most facets of the game in comprehensively winning 5-1.

The Midlands Men's team had been fiercely competitive against most sides and Canterbury's upset 1-7 loss last Sunday to North Harbour and their anticipated backlash against Midlands was only one of Coach Sue McLeish's worries. The five week loss through injury to fullback Warren Phillips at practice, counting him out for the playoffs in Auckland this weekend, was foremost in her mind. With McLeish resorting to experimental last minute repositioning, Canterbury took full toll of the Midlands defensive lapses in prevailing 6-1, even though brothers Craig and Dean Armstrong, sharing goalie duties, made scoring difficult for the visitors.

Dutch import Taeke Taekema displayed to the faithfull crowd his drag flick prowess and his two goals for a tally of 15 in seven games, kept him one goal in front of North Harbours David Kosoof. Midlands import Oluseyi Initiri continued to show his class displaying maturity in his passing game to keep slim Midland hopes alive. This Saturday, for 5th-8th, the Midland women play Auckland, while the men play Southern.
