The Cook University and Te Awamutu both achieved the Inter-City/Waikato Hockey championship double for 2003, when they won their finals at the Gallagher Hockey Centre 5-2 and 2-1 respectively.
The Men’s final was won 5-2 by University after thy had scored four goals in the first 20 minutes. At 4-0 people wondered how long it would be before Lone Star Fraser-Tech completely capitulated. However Tech came back to score two goals before half time.

It took just three minutes into the game for Varsity to open the scoring when they forced a penalty corner, from which Tony Hopping scored, and it was 2-0 minutes later when Brad Bellamy scored from another penalty corner. With Matthew Stafford controlling play well for University at Centre Half, the students’ passing game was paying dividends. This was confirmed when Morice McMillin added to the score when he found his way through a feeble defence. After the fourth goal Tech began to gain more possession, and with it confidence came into their game, and on one of their early forays into the circle a penalty corner was forced from which Tim Dobbs scored. With their new-found confidence Fraser-Tech began to execute some threatening passing moves, but Hamish O’Neill was very strong at Right Half for Varsity, and the Tech forwards were frustrated by his presence. Towards the end of the spell Nick Connolly and Sandeep Puna were making big in-roads towards the Varsity goal, and when Dobbs again scored there was a ray of hope.

The game resumed at a fast pace with Connolly enjoying a lot of freedom and the Varsity defence was stretched to hold the blue and whites out. Tech were forcing their to the circle, but early penalty corners were not converted. After enjoying so much possession, Tech turned the ball over and Luke Emerson took play to the circle, where he sent in a strong shot which Craig Armstrong saved in a manner reminiscent of his older brother in the Varsity goal. The game was sealed when McMillin scored his second, but had it not been for such a shocking start, Fraser-Tech may well have secured the title.

The Women’s Final was not played at the same pace as the Men’s, but Te Awamutu built up a huge territorial advantage, and with superior ball control in mid-field placed the Southern United defence under pressure, but their attacks were breaking down at crucial times in the circle. Southern made the odd foray into Te Awamutu territory, but they turned over far too much possession.

After a scoreless first half Te Awamutu were straight back on to the attack, and Maria Dunn sent in a stinging shot which was well kept out by Toni Clough in the goal, however in the opening penalty corner of the half Robyn Matthews scored from a strong shot. Play continued to fluctuate with both teams turning over possession, and from yet another penalty corner Renee Hurihuranganui increased the lead. The final scoring came when Diane Lamont found the net for Southern.
