“The Cook” University and Te Awamutu will both be striving for the Waikato and Inter-city Double next Saturday, but each will have different opponents to those of their Inter- city Finals.

In Saturday’s semis,University beat Old Boys 5-3, while in the other men’s semi Lonestar Fraser- Tech beat Ecolab Suburbs 8-7 after penalty strokes, after the sides were locked at 4-4 at full time.In the women’s games Te Awamutu beat Ultimate University 5-2, and Southern United beat Old Girls 4-2, after strokes, following a scoreless draw.

Fraser Tech made all the early play in their clash with Suburbs, and were rewarded when Richard Petherick executed a strong Drag flick to open the scoring at a penalty corner. Tech continued to dominate and apply pressure, but Suburbs began to string some passes together, and Karl Sanders equalised when he found space following a strong build-up. Play then fluctuated for some time with neither side establishing any authority.

Tech attacked early in the second half, and forced a penalty corner, which was cleared. However Tim Smith put them into the lead again moments later. It appeared Tech were going to run away with the gamewhen Nick Connolly scored soon after. Still Suburbs came back, and Matthew Luxford found space in the circle to receive and score to reduce the margin.Tech’s ball retention and distribution were more reliable, and this was confirmed when Rob Crozier scored. Suburbs still had some fight in them as Ian Haste slammed in a hard shot at a penalty corner to bring his team to be within one goal. Suburbs continued to press, and forced the game to penalty strokes when John Forbes equalised. The penalty stroke competition that resulted in Tech winning was probably a fair reflection, as Tech had dominated the game in normal time.

Te Awamutu were camped deep in University’s half for long periods of time, and after Maria Dunn had opened the scoring,Te Awamutu continued to press home their territorial advantage. With Dunn and Michele Whitehead carving through the University defence there seemed no way through for the students. Varsity then began to win some ball, and Clarissa Eshuis made a strong run to force a penalty corner, from which she scored. Eshuis scored again a few minutes later for the young Varsity team to hit the front, but Jenny Carter regained some composure for Te Awamutu when she equalised. Just on half time Dunn broke away again and scored to regain the lead. Te Awamutu resumed control of the game after the interval when Dunn scored. After this the game became rather scrappy, and Renee Hurihuranganui scored late in the game to clinch a finals berth.
