| Richard Morgan Waikato Hockey 20-7-2003 The Womens Intercity Hockey Competition produced close games in all cases except one match on Saturday. The one exception was where a rampant Fraser Tech over ran cellar-dwellers Mount Maunganui 8-1 at the Gallagher Hockey Centre. In the only other Hamilton game Southern United beat Ultimate University 4-2, while Old Girls beat Onewhero-Pukekohe 2-0 in Pukekohe, and Te Awamutu prevailed over Aces 2-0 in Rotorua. In Mens Intercity, Old Boys caused a boil over when they beat Otumoetai 6-3, after trailing 0-2 at one stage in the first spell. There was a surprise at Pukekohe when Lonestar Fraser Tech were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly ranked Kohekohe, and in the remaining games Ecolab Suburbs-Piako beat Mount Maunganui 5-2 in an error-ridden affair in Hamilton, while Eastside University beat Papakura 5-2 in Pukekohe. Fraser Tech women were in control from the outset in their encounter with bottom placed Mount Maunganui and the scoreline did not totally reflect the dominance the home team enjoyed. It was obvious from the opening stanzas that Mount Maunganui were always going to be under pressure from a Tech team anxious to put a large score on the board. The first goal eventually came after Nicky Pearce found her way to the circle and sent a hard ball through to Yvette Hall who finished off. Tech were back onto the attack from the hit-off, and after some strong attacking a strong through ball found the edge of Julia McAskills stick, and deflected into the goal. Further efficient passing culminated in Bryonie Hutchinson scoring the first of her four goals, and halftime followed shortly after Hutchinson scored from a penalty corner. Techs domination continued in the second spell when Pearce sent in a blistering shot at a penalty corner. Moments later Pearce scored from a similar situation. Mount Maunganui tried to get into the game, but the ruthless domination Tech enjoyed stopped that from happening. Hutchinson had Techs seventh goal in the net before Kim Blackstock scored Mounts only goal from a goal mouth scramble. In a great individual effort Hutchinson scored her fourth shortly before full time. Nobody would have foreseen what was going to happen in Old Boys game against Otumoetai after Manu Singh and Clinton Snee had scored to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Old Boys began to get possession and threatened to break through on many occasions without posing too many problems for the Otumoetai defence. However Old Boys still persisted and after Cliff Nightingale, Andre Le Claire and David Heappey had combined for the latter to finish, the locals began to look more assured as their confidence began to show. After continuously pounding the circle Old Boys drew level just before halftime when Heappey converted a penalty stroke. Otumoetai attacked straight after half time and were rewarded when Andrew Bigham put back into the lead, but the lead was short-lived when Heappey scored his third. Both teams then strived for the game breaker, but it was Old Boys who hit the front when Ashley Burkhart took play to the circle for Toby Schofield to finish off. Otumoetai tried to regain their composure, but Old Boys managed to turn over possession and a strong build-up resulted in Paul Rae scoring to give his team a two goal margin. By this time Old Boys were completely dominant, and this was confirmed when Le Claire scored the games final goal. In a game which was deferred from last week to Sunday, Papakura defaulted to Suburbs to bring about a change in the top placings with Suburbs moving to the top ahead of University. Otumoetai and Fraser Tech lie third and fourth respectively.
