Tokoroa put in a great defensive effort at the Gallagher Hockey Centre on Sunday before going down 1-0 to Rose and Thorn Te Awamutu.
The Women's Intercity clash featured strong attacking and passing skills from Te Awamutu, and tight defence from Tokoroa. An early penalty stroke was saved by Tokoroa goal-keeper Toni Clough and Te Awamutu increased the pressure but the Tokoroa defence still held strong. Both teams then tried to strive for ascendancy, but it was Te Awamutu's Maria Dunn who scored the only goal of the game after receiving a great through ball from Michelle Whitehead. After the goal was scored Te Awamutu began to consolidate with Helen Tooman and Dunn making threatening raids. Along with Clough in goal for Tokoroa, April Flett was as calm as ever at right half and coped well in holding the attacks at bay. Late in the first spell Te Awamutu applied more pressure but the Tokoroa defence remained sound.
Te Awamutu resumed the attack in the second half and broke through the Tokoroa defence however Clough was able to scramble the ball clear. Much of the play was centred between the Tokoroa twenty-five yard line and the goal, but after absorbing much of the pressure Tokoroa enjoyed some attacking moments but failed to look too threatening and the game ended with Te Awamutu back on attack.
In other Women's games, Boots 'N' All Fraser Tech beat Onewhero-Pukekohe 6-0 at Gallagher Hockey Centre on Saturday, Old Girls beat Mount Maunganui 4-1 at the Mount and Rotorua Aces beat Ultimate University 4-3 at Rotorua.
In Men's Hockey Fraser Tech beat Kohekohe 4-1 in Pukekohe, and in the game following Pukekohe Indians picked up their second win in as many weeks by beating Suburbs-Piako 4-2. Eastside University returned to form by running out 6-0 winners over Mount Maunganui at the Mount. Old Boys beat Otumoetai 3-1 in Hamilton.
