The two Men's Intercity hockey matches were contrasting in style on Saturday at Gallagher Hockey Centre, with Eastside University downing Boots 'n' All Fraser Tech 2-1 in a fast flowing match. In Hamilton's other game, Suburbs-Piako lost their match with Kohekohe, 3-2 in a drab affair after all the goals were scored before half-time. At the Mount, Hamilton Old Boys beat Mount Maunganui 6-1 with Andrew Singers scoring four goals.

In Women's hockey Old Girls beat Realmedia University 7-1 after leading 7-0 at half-time, while Tokoroa and Onewhero Pukekohe played out a scoreless draw. A very disappointing aspect in Women's Intercity was Mount Maunganui defaulting to Boots 'n' All Fraser Tech.

After players and spectators had observed a minutes silence in memory of Fraser Tech Patron Andy Wilson who passed away last week, the game commenced at a fast pace and it was not long before University were attacking with Casey Henwood dribbling well to the circle to feed Tony Hopping whose shot went wide. The Varsity passing was slick in the opening stanzas, and Tech really had to call on all their energies to hold the student's attacks at bay. However following a great high ball from Warren Phillips, Fraser Tech were able to force a penalty corner but this was saved.

Fraser Tech started to acquire confidence and were able to enjoy more possession, and from a great pass by Sandeep Puna to Nick Connolly the ball was fed to Leighton Hammond, who threatened to split the defence, but somehow University cleared. Play fluctuated between the two sides for about five minutes before Blair Hopping showed his class by converting a penalty corner from a situation where most teams would never have scored.

Late in the first spell Fraser Tech came back to force two penalty corners, the second of which was slotted by New Zealand under 16 Academy player, Richard Petherick.

The second half began in pouring rain and on a flooded turf with the scores level, and Varsity went onto the offence to create goal scoring opportunities, but Richard Baggs in the Tech goal was able to nullify the attacks. Although Tech began to enjoy more possession, Henwood and Blair Hopping controlled the ball distribution for Varsity and this was always going to be a major hurdle for Tech to clear. Both teams continued to seek the ascendancy as the water began to drain from the turf, but after Henwood missed from a drag flick at a penalty corner, Brad Bellamy scored from another to regain the student's lead. There was no further scoring as University continued their domination at the top of the table.
