| The Waikato University Hockey Club took "University Sports Club of the Year" at the first Blues Awards Dinner on September 27th at the new Cultural Centre overlooking the University Gardens. Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist, Blair Hopping, took the "University Sportsman of the Year " while Dean Armstrong took "Fairplay Award of the Year". Both were joined by Casey Henwood as University Blues Winners. All three are members of the Midlands Express Hockey team as part of the National Hockey League. Casey captains the side which narrowly lost to Auckland 2-3 on Sunday after a penalty stroke. Other Award winners were Rod Laurence, Life Member of the University Club, who won the "Services to Sports Award". Rod has been a Club Committee member for 10 years and is largely responsible for building the player base to 13 teams - the largest hockey club in the Waikato. Debi Howe won the "Sports Administrator of the Year" award. Debi is President of the University Club and was the Convenor of the hockey sector of the University Games in May this year. |
