Umpiring Mini Hockey Mini Semifinals 2nd Sept 06 006.2.JPG

The umpires are the "third team" on the field at our mini hockey games. They are the ones who keep the game fun, fair and safe for the players. We expect every team to supply an umpire.

Support is available every Saturday from our Umpire Mentors.

Umpiring 6 a side hockey
We are happy for coaches to umpire their own team's game, but also welcome the involvement of parents or older students as umpires.  Umpiring games for this age group is about keeping the game flowing, keeping it safe, and often explaining to children what to do (free hits for example).

Umpiring 8 a side hockey
For 8 a side teams, each team must provide an umpire who is NOT the coach. At this level it is still important to keep the game flowing, but more emphasis is placed on penalising infringements such as feet, poor tackling and raised balls.

Umpire training and support Smokefree 2005 012.33.jpg
Umpire mentors, Colin Watson & Alastair Kerr are on hand watching 8 a side games on Saturday mornings, giving feedback at half time and after games. If an umpire would like someone to stand alongside them on the field, they can approach one of the mentors to do this. Group training sessions are also offered during the season.
