| "Argentina never seem to be rushed and are very patient. They read the game well and have some very skilful players going forward. Their penalty corners are also very dangerous." New Zealand have only lost to Japan twice in the last 15 meetings, with the last occasion being the last time they met - 4-0 at the Olympic qualifying tournament in England in early 2000. However, New Zealand's record against Argentina is less impressive, with three straight losses overseas, including a 1-0 defeat at the Champions Trophy in Macau in September. Borren will look to use the recalled Canterbury pair of Karen Mee and centre forward Carol Ward in the tri-series. Mee is back in the Black Sticks after three years overseas. The double header could also be significant for Wellington midfielder Rachel Sutherland and Canterbury goalkeeper Anne Marie Irving, who are two games shy of their 50th caps. |

Borren: Black Sticks will benefit from matches
15 November 2002 By JONATHAN MILLMOW Black Sticks hockey coach Jan Borren believes the playing styles of this weekend's tri-series opponents Argentina and Japan will be great preparation for the fast approaching World Cup in Perth. The New Zealand women play Japan at Albany tonight and cup favourites Argentina at Pakuranga tomorrow before going to Perth on Monday for the two-week tournament. Japan, ranked 14, are characterised by their speed and the pressure they put on the opposition ball carriers, while Argentina, silver medalists at the Sydney Olympics, play an expansive, composed style. "Japan are very quick, and similar to what we will encounter in several teams at the World Cup," Borren said. |
