Umpires Ross Tritt and Chris Neal ran a controlled smooth match in this Super 8 clash, allowing the game to flow fast and furious.
There were several forays into both circles in the opening 10 minutes, but the HBHS defence was sure all night. Both teams attacked down the middle but to no avail. Poor passing and individual attempts for a shot on goal were quickly snuffed out by both teams. HBHS scored from its set-play combination penalty corners to take the lead at half-time 3-0.
Boys High listened intently to coach Doug Sommerville and the second half produced a different game. HBHS showed its class with Richard Petherick distributing the ball regularly to both left and right side attack. Within 5 minutes BJ Watling had his hat-trick with No17, Matthew Luxford following with his 10 minutes later. All pressure was on the Rotorua goal with penalty after penalty as Boys High showed some good short passing skills in the circle area.
Richard Petherick capped off the game on a penalty corner which saw the ball disintergrate when he hit the shot on goal. While everyone watched a large orange piece soar 10 metres over the top of the goal; Umpire Ross Tritt saw another bit hit the corner back board. The goal was awarded; but the purists ran for their rule books.
In the end it was a fine display by Hamilton, which is well on track for its 4th year in the Rankin Cup at Christchurch in August.
