ALL ABOUT MINI HOCKEY 2008

The Waikato Hockey Mini hockey competition is for players in Years 2-6 at school.

HOW DO I JOIN A TEAM?

Most primary schools in Hamilton and the surrounding rural areas organise teams during late March and early April. Look out for information in school newsletters and notices. If your school does not have a team, but you are keen to play, contact Waikato Hockey by phone or email as we may be able to link you up with another school.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE GAMES HELD?

Games are held on Saturday mornings between 8 a.m. and midday. Most games are at Gallagher Hockey Centre (Innes Common) on the artificial turf but some teams may have alternate games on turf at one of the Hamilton secondary schools. The season starts on Sat 10^th May and ends in September.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Costs vary as schools may include uniform hire or other fees. Generally it will cost around $30-$45 for a 15 week winter season.

WHAT GEAR WILL I NEED?

Mouthguard, shinpads and comfortable sports shoes/sneakers are a must. Your school will supply a uniform, and schools often loan sticks to first year players. A new stick will cost $20 - $30. Don’t buy one too big.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT GRADES?

Yes, new players generally start in 6 a side teams based on age/school year. Experienced players play in 8 a side teams. Most games are 30 minutes long. Teams are ranked within each grade during the season to ensure fair and enjoyable competition.

Preseason “Have a Go” modules for new players are running at 4 venues in late March

Training for coaches – Sat 5^th April 9 a.m. -12
