WAIKATO HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
JUNIOR MANAGEMENT BOARD

End of season open forum

WHEN: Monday 10 September, 7pm
WHERE: Pavilion, Gallagher Hockey Centre, Hamilton

This was well attended by both Secondary and Intermediate teachers.

The JM Board were given a number of issues to discuss and review before next year. Some of the hilights were...

• Representative goal keepers subsidies on use of equipment supplied by schools.

• The perennial problem of lower grades turning up without an umpire and basically blaming everyone else, even though rules are in place. An interesting suggestion was made to change the points structure awarded 4-2-0 if you have brought along an umpire. There is a misconception that it is part of a teachers employment to be at the game. More parents need to be involved in coaching and administration of school teams.

• There needs to be more time for schools to react(at least a week) when "decisions" are published and the "event" takes place.eg. changes in draws.

• There are too many changes to the draws after first publication, and little time to react. (eg transport to change of venue, days, times etc.)

• All draws should be dated with version numbers to avoid confusion.

• ONE week only to get results to office, or forfiet? (If no card; you can email)

• It is the responsibility of the winning team to get the game card in! NOT the UMPIRE!

• The office staff work hard to meet demands of schools. They receive dozens of emails and phone calls each week; but are yet to master "mental telepathy".(Schools should plan ahead 6 weeks).

• Results need to go on web the week after cutoff.

• Eligibility - suggestion that school ID photos for championship teams be posted to JMB in final registration to avoid "cheating". This can be easily done with schools that use the MUSAC ID database recommended by MOE.

• That there should be a statement on the website about "FAIRPLAY".

• The perennial problem of early and late scheduling of games around travel was discussed.

• Interpretation of the "dangerous play" rule needs clarification.

Seddon Polgase, Chair of Umpires Cmte and Vice-President of NZ Hockey forwarded a white paper to all schools attending.Download PDF >>
