RE:              Rule changes for 2007 regarding goalkeepers

The 2007/08 International Hockey Federation (FIH) features one new rule that requires specific attention regarding goalkeepers.

The new rule states that a team does not need to play with a goalkeeper. The rule now allows three options:

1)             a full padded goalkeeper;

2)             a goal keeper with only protective head gear and a different coloured shirt;

3)             no goalkeeper (ie, 11 field players)

Hockey NZ advises that, while the above FIH ruling will apply in 2007, every team playing in a Hockey New Zealand tournament in 2007 is required to have a fully padded goalkeeper within their team. Hockey NZ also recommends that a fully padded goalkeeper is in their starting line up.

Kind regards
