The
weather was not the only bomb to drop on the Intercity Hockey competition
over the weekend with both Hooper Cup finalists Hamilton Old Boys
and The Riv Suburbs Piako now in jeopardy of missing the Intercity
semi finals in a fortnights time.
Suburbs were the makers of their own misfortune with a lack
of scoring composure seeing them surprisingly beaten by Fraser Tech
1 nil. Hamilton Old Boys by contrast have
the misfortune to have to replay their 4-2 win in their
delayed match using fill in officials against Tauranga Old Boys
will stand. If the match is deemed a draw and not replayed it will leave
them in the unenviable position of having to beat pool leaders University
CBD in next weeks final pool match to make the semi’s or
hope Kohekohe lose to bottom placed Rotorua Indians.
University showed top form in disposing of Rotorua Indians
7-1 with a combination of clinical PC finishing and
intelligent option taking and have earned a home semi final likely to
be against Papakura.
Valley United are all but guaranteed a home semi final after the
weather forced the postponement of their home fixture against Otumoetai
but with Darren Smith away to Beijing with the Black
Sticks and Lloyd Stephenson injured, they may struggle
to regain their all conquering form in the playoffs.
The Women’s
intercity finals race has narrowed to three contenders with Fraser
Tech losing the battle with top four contenders Onewhero Pukekohe
0-2 to miss a finals spot. They bounced back from the
loss on Saturday to defeat Te Awamutu 3 nil
but must defeat Aces in their last match to give themselves
a chance at a top four finish.
Aces struggled to down Te Awamutu 1 nil
on Saturday and were beaten 3-0 by unbeaten Otumoetai
on Sunday.
Competition leaders Avenue Storage University were in excellent
goal scoring form over the double header weekend winning 10-0
and 7-1 over Papakura and Valley United
respectively. A hat trick by NZ Junior Cathryn Findlayson
and a double by Clarissa Eshuis paved the way for the
victory and next weeks encounter against 2nd placed Otumoetai
should decide home final advantage. The students have a far superior
goal differential but will have to keep the McGarvey sisters
in check and utilise their strike forwards potential to the maximum
to penetrate a well-organised Otumoetai defence led by ex Black
Stick captain Di Te Awa (nee Weavers).
