Hamilton Old Boys continued to surprise when upsetting title contenders
The Cook University 4-2 on Saturday.
Varsity opened the game strongly and dominated territory and possession
but in a rare attack Old Boy’s opened the scoring when Fraser
Kilgour collected a rebounded shot to score from close range.
Tony Hopping put Varsity on level pegging with a well
constructed PC variation and Billy Emery gave the students
a deserved lead with a deft touch.
Kilgour belied his inexperience at Premier level to close the half with
his second field goal and opened the second half by completing his hat
trick from a PC.
Old Boys appeared hungrier for the win than Varsity and Kilgour turned
provider by delivering a well timed pass for Zac Woods
to shoot from close range and seal the victory.
Fraser Tech
men hung on bravely against Valley United to collect
their second win and join Old Boys Varsity and Suburbs at the top of
the table. Grant Goile opened the Tech scoring with
a PC conversion but Valley responded through a Mark Scrampton
field goal. HBHS youngster Matt Orr continued to impress
at Premier level scoring an opportunistic goal immediately from the
restart.
Darren Luckin and Tyler Edwards increased
Tech’s advantage to 4-1 through a field goal and drag flicked
PC respectively. Valley, as always showed dogged determination, and
with Lloyd Stephenson and Lincoln Churchill
leading the way they charged back into the game with two well taken
Trent Summers goals.
NZ Masters rep Pete Nicol restored some advantage
for Tech to increase the lead to 5-3 but a Stephenson PC conversion
mid way through the second spell set up a frenetic final quarter.
Stand out "Player of the Day", Tech goal keeper Robin
Sawyer, again showed his class pulling off a series of crucial
saves to deny Valley the equaliser.
Southern United’s late withdrawal from the women’s premier
competition has allowed the Thames Valley women an
excellent opportunity to compete against Waikato’s top sides ahead
of the intercity competition. They struggled early on against unbeaten
Fraser Tech and trailed 0-2 at half time after Debbie
Bell and Lee Millar converted their opportunities in front
of goal.
Valley showed more composure in the second half and did well to keep
Tech scoreless, but Tech’s defensive unit was too experienced
to relinquish their half time lead and maintained their unbeaten run
with the 2-0 win.
Varsity and Te Awamutu
played non competition games with a 4-3 win and 2-4 loss against the
Waikato U16’s and U18’s repectively.
