NZ win again with a 4-0 whitewash of Spain -

New Zealand were able to take control of the first half of today’s game, keeping the ball mostly in the Spanish end. New Zealand was able to secure a goal when Petrea Webster scored from a penalty corner.

Early in the second half, Spain’s Carlota Petchame was awarded a penalty stroke but missed the shot and the opportunity to tie the game. New Zealand continued to keep the ball deep in the Spanish end throughout the second half. In the 30th minute, Katie Glynn scored to bring the team up 2-0 and. shortly after, Glynn maintained her fire and put New Zealand up 3-0. In the final minutes, Midlands & Senior Blackstick player Gemma Flynn scored off a penalty corner to end the game and secure a place in the top 12 post section play.

JWC Women begin their quest for Gold with an emphatic 3 - 1 win over Netherlands.

Ella Gunson in action v NetherlandsAlthough New Zealand conceded the opening goal to Kitty van Male in their first up match vs. Netherlands at the Junior World Cup being played at Harvard University in Boston USA, Midlands and University player Cat Finlayson equalised six minutes before half time to give the Kiwi’s confidence going into the second half. The team, coached by one of the most astute hockey minds in the country in Chris Leslie, came out firing in the second half. Katie Glynn gave the Kiwi’s the perfect start to the second spell with a well taken PC strike and sealed the win with a field goal six minutes later. The NZ defence played well in Captain Courageous Lucy Talbot v Netherlandskeeping out one of the pre tournament favourites for the remaining 17 minutes and signal to the rest of the teams that they, like the Junior boys had done before them, were there to WIN.

Korea, title holders for the past two world cups and probably early favourites again, were equally impressive in downing the top America’s qualifier Chile 6-1. Other winners were Germany who downed Argentina 2-1 and Great Britain who had a comfortable 5-0 win over France.
