Bruce Rosemergy Report
for NOV-DEC 2003

REPORT TO WHA BY REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
NOVEMBER 27 2003

As if to confirm that hockey has become a year round activity this last month has seen the RDM involved in a range of hockey related functions, only some of which involved hands on hockey playing or coaching.

SUMMER LEAGUE
An intermediate schools summer league has run for six weeks and concludes on 27 November.

MIDLANDS
Midlands discussions are proceeding well . It's evident that there is goodwill and determination by the five associations to make the union function effectively. They have expressed interest in being involved in making the four Midland coaching appointments.

GB v NZ TEST
This has taken a huge sluice of time and energy for both the WHA Hockey Manager and RDM. Time will tell whether it has been worth it. To date we have had good support from the local print and radio media, with yet more to follow in the next couple of days. A conscious effort has been made to record the planning processes and structures being used for this test, so that a record is available for future planning.

MEDIA
The decision was made to use the local print media to profile hockey. To date we have had several out of season articles in Hamilton Press, and Waikato Times.

RECRUITMENT
Both WINTEC and University of Waikato have offered financial incentives for first year students to study locally in 2004. With this knowledge I have recruited and encouraged several promising young players to study locally. All of them made application to Scottwood Trust for scholarship support and these applications are due to be notified shortly.

SECONDARY LEAVERS
Our NZHF contract requires us to try and track hockey playing school leavers. As usual this has been a challenging exercise with few returns being received from students who are known to be leaving town. The current system is being reviewed (and hopefully modified 0 in 2004.

YEAR 8 LEAVERS
Names of Yr 8 hockey players have been collated and forwarded to their intended schools. Some schools use this information well .

DATA BASE
The coach data base has been up dated to include known additions and deletions. The additions will be particularly valuable when we look to target coaches for upskilling prior to 2004 season.

COMMUNITY COACH OF THE YEAR
This award supported by SPARC is made to the club/ school coach of the year in our region. The winner, selected by an independent panel from Sport Waikato, was Brenda Coleman whose success in promoting and developing hockey at Glen Massey will now see Brenda's name go forward to Wellington for national judging.

ADULT COACHING
A number of adults from IH sheltered work shops had an afternoon of hockey activity on 14 November.

UMPIRES ASSOCIATION
Chaired by Seddon Polglase an umpires group held a very constructive meeting to begin planning for 2004 season. I am optimistic that some positive local initiatives in the training and recruitment of umpires, will be implemented in 2004. This ties in well with the NZHF moves to advance umpiring by recruiting three part time Umpiring Development Managers, one of whom is likely to be Craig Gribble.

RDM CONFERENCE
Held this year in Christchurch the conference enabled RDMs to be briefed and updated on topics such as: amendments to job descriptions, new resources, NZHF initiatives including Umpire Development Managers and the establishment of three High Performance Centres and officers in NZ.

PLANNING FOR 2004
Some secondary school reps met to coordinate an application to SMB for 2 or 3 boys 1st XI teams to play primarily in the SMB competition instead of the schools grade of JMB in 2004. There will inevitably be a few fish hooks in their entry to SMB competitions but with goodwill by both schools and SMB compromise solutions should be possible.

CONSTITUTION REVIEW
Due to Peter Cawkwell 's huge effort in providing an up dated template, a major review and re-write of the existing WHA Constitution was completed during the past weekend. Input was provided by each of our component groups. During the coming weeks we will need to consider the draft and then prepare for the adoption of the new Constitution at the AGM, in mid February.

COACHING
Reviews completed with more of the 2003 rep coaches. Applications are now open for all WHA and Midland positions. Closing date is 7-12-03

PENDING
We need to look at structures and processes to consider the contents, adoption and later implementation of the amended Constitution .
Regional Forum in Auckland on 3 December Agenda includes establishing 2004 programme.
Planning by SMB, JMB and Mini for the format of their 2004 seasons
Coaching appointments prior to Christmas
Scheduling of coaching courses in 2004
