Waikato's Debbie Balme - NZ Hockey Manager Reports

Hi all

Someone told me the Opening Ceremony would be something I will remember always and an amazing experience - WELL THEY WERE RIGHT!!!!!!!

The chinese really turned it on and it was fabulous - as we were towards the back we didn't have to leave the village till 7.30 and then we were seated by country in a huge air conditioned indoor stadium - plenty of fluids and food and even better FAMOUS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yes I did it - I got the shot with a famous person guess who!!!!!! Yip you guessed it - me all the way from little old NZ and Rog!!!!!!!!!!! Fan bloody tastic - really neat guy.

Once we left the village we walked (very slowly!!) towards the birdsnest with both sides of the path lined with screaming chinese volunteers wanting photos and high fives!!! Our shirts were incredible and in phots the silver fern glows - wow!!

We walked through a long tunnel and you could just feel the hype and excitement and then we were there - greeted by thousands of screaming fans - amazing. I am at a loss of words to describe how totally incredible the whole thing was. I was txting Geoff most of the time so was awsum to sort of have him near!! He was at the beach with Amy, Nick and Marty and they got up to watch it.

We have our first game in the morning - Japan at 8.30 - will be a toughy but we are ready - bring it on I say!!!

Clearer today but very very hot and humid

Hope all is well with you all

Love to all

Deb
