Waikato's Debbie Balme - NZ Hockey Manager Reports

Hi there

Well as you all know we played the gold medalists from last year and went down 2 1 in the last minute of the game - gut wrenching stuff. The team played a great game and had Germany in a major panic for a lot of the game. We scored first and went into the 2nd half 1 0 up. they scored their second goal which went to the video referee for a decision - 3 mins 43 secs later they awarded the goal to Germany - took forever to decide that's how hard it was to tell!!!

Upset for the players cause they played their hearts out and made us all proud. We must win the next three games to have a shot at the semis - tough call all round but my girls are made of tough stuff!!

Went on a wee adventure yesterday and left the village for a while just checking out venues for the girls to meet with family and friends away from the hockey turf - found a few spots near by - even managed to get lost once - had our liason lass with us - Rebecca - she is amazing and even wears a blackstick shirt (one of the gilrs gave it to her) to our games - she was in tears at the end of last night - was so gutted for the girls.

We are now having police escorts to and from our games - the security has certainly stepped out - alot of soldiers with big guns out and about outside the village and even saw 8 tanks parked on corners all over the place!!

The "sea mist" has rolled in today again (ha ha) the girls have some time out with family this afternoon and we have training tonight.

Hope all is well in NZ

Love to all

Deb
